The schlossfelsen (castle rock)

You are now standing at the entrance to a compound dating from the 16th / 17th century, which is below ground today. 14 metres beneath Saarbrücken's Schlossplatz, the stairway leads down into a bastion with a castle moat.

The complex was excavated from 2003-07 and has been accessible to visitors since 2007. Time and again in the preceding decades too, there were excavations here. Here you can see a selection of the objects found. These finds represent the various aspects of the structures on schlossfelsen. This area of the exhibition sheds light on the history of the county of Saarbrücken and the architectural development on the castle rock over the centuries.

On the opposite side of the exhibition area you will find the so-called 'Red Tower'. There, topics from mediaeval life are explained for children and adults.
